Texas Food Tour, Spring Break 2013

For Spring Break this year, we only had a couple of days that we could go on a vacation, so we had to be creative.  We decided to take a Texas Food Tour of restaurants in a large loop from San Antonio to Austin, and back.  Bryan had read about or heard of all the places we went, and he'd always wanted to take a trip to eat at them.  So, why not do it all in one weekend??  We started off by going straight to downtown Austin, where we hit a local University of Texas hangout called Hut's Hamburgers.  We were the only family of 6 in that place, I can tell you that!  We were hungry, and the burgers tasted great!  It was voted "Best Hamburger in Texas" a couple of times, thus it made the list.  After dinner we drove over to a food truck and trailer park close to campus, to eat dessert at a place (converted Winnebago) called Gordoughs.  Bryan and I have actually eaten there once before, and it was just as good as we remembered.  We're talking HUGE eat-with-a-knife-and-fork doughnuts, made to order.  We ordered three, and split them all.  We had a cream cheese and Heath topped one, a chocolate fudge and brownie topped one, and a chocolate marshmallow cream topped one.  It was hard to say which one was best!  After dessert we headed back to our hotel to swim and hit the sack.  We had to get a good night sleep, so that we'd be ready to eat well (and often!) the next day!  We played and got packed up the next morning, and headed off to breakfast at Kirby Lane Cafe.  It was such an ordinary looking place, in a strip mall, but we knew we were in the right spot when we saw the crowds waiting for a table!  They are famous for their "Pancake of the Week," and this week's pancake was a peanut butter batter, with bananas inside, topped with Nutella.  Oh my, was it amazing!  Ruby tried the gingerbread pancake, Ella had the chocolate chip, Tyler, Spencer, and I all had the special, and Bryan had pumpkin bread french toast.  So delicious!  We rolled out of there around noon, and drove over to Inks Lake.  We rented canoes and rowed around the lake, watching cliff jumpers, for an hour or so, then played in the lake.  The water was freezing, but we had some time to kill until we were hungry again!  Finally we could think about food, so we drove off to Burnet, Texas.  There we dined at the Burnet Feed Store and BBQ.  That place smelled awesome, and was so very Texas.  We loved it, and BBQ tasted so good after such a sweet breakfast.  After BBQ, though, you're ready for sweet again!  Good thing, too, since we had pie in Marble Falls up next on our itinerary.  We drove down to Marble Falls, stopping on the way to take a picture with the Bluebonnets, until we arrived at our destination - the Bluebonnet Cafe, home of the best pie in Texas.  And they weren't kidding!  It was such delicious pie, and only an hour from San Antonio, so I'm sure I'll be back.  We tried six different varieties, and the Fudge and Coconut Cream were my favorite.  We drove home in relative silence while our food comas took over, and ended the trip with the a great night sleep back home in our beds.
