The Magical Mystery Tour

Where to even begin with this trip! I guess I'll start at the beginning. About a year ago, my friend Charlyce read an article about a group of girlfriends taking a mystery weekend trip once a year, where they alternate being the "planner" and the rest of the group has no idea where they are going for their weekend away. Now, if you know the Fab Five you will know that this is RIGHT up our alley!! The five of us have been friends since Elementary School, and we have diligently tried to get together whenever we can. I have been the real problem child, living all over the place, but we had big plans for when I finally moved back to the states for good. Well, sadly, it has been near impossible to find a time that is convenient for all 5 of us to get together! So when Charlyce mentioned this idea, we all jumped on board for many reasons. First, it sounded awesome! Second, it would force us to plan and commit to a weekend about a year in advance. And third, we could all decide on a budget so far in advance that there would be plenty of time to save up. So last summer we decided to go for it! We made a 5-way call, all busted out our 2010 calendars, and decided on a weekend and a budget. It turned out that Mother's Day weekend was the one and only weekend that we could all agree on, so we tweaked it a bit so that we left on Thursday and came home on Sunday. Perfect! Then we drew names for who would be the first planner. Charlyce was the lucky gal! We all sent our money in to her a couple of months later, and then we waited and looked forward to the trip all throughout the school year. And it finally came! About 10 days before the trip, Charlyce sent us all the projected weather forecast, as well as a small packing list (swim suit, cover-up/sunhat/sunscreen, comfortable walking shoes). Then the night before our flights, she sent us each our airline, confirmation number, and departure time. Is that the most exciting trip you can even imagine??? It was so awesome, and was so fun to look forward to!! The morning of the trip I found myself all nervous. It felt weird going away somewhere by myself! That feeling was soon replaced, however, with sheer fun, excitement, and relaxation. And aren't you dying to know where we ended up??? Charleston, South Carolina!!!! It was the dream girl's trip, and Charlyce did such an outstanding job planning every little detail. Even with all her good planning, however, my flight was still delayed 2 hours in San Antonio, causing me to miss my connection (where I was supposed to be meeting up with the Utah girls), and also having the airline lose my luggage for the first 24 hours. But honestly, those are such minor details. I borrowed a swimming suit and all was fine!

We spent the first morning at the beach on Sullivan's Island. It was a fun and relaxing morning, with lots of good time to talk and catch up. And remember, we have known each other our entire lives, and are all in similar life circumstances, so the talking was some good stuff! That afternoon we had a late lunch at Poe's Tavern, which was a fun restaurant on Sullivan's island built in Edgar Allen Poe's old house. It was great! Then we headed back to our hotel, got cleaned up (thankfully my suitcase had arrived), and we went downtown. We were so excited to walk around in downtown Charleston, and were really looking forward to our Ghost Tour that night. Did you know that Charleston is one of the most haunted cities in America? Well, that's the word on the street. Unfortunately, our Ghost Tour was a series of walks through some alley ways and some really lame "Girl's Camp" quality ghost stories. We kept hoping that the good part was yet to come, but alas...it did not. But the laughs we've had since then, all at our poor tour guide's expense, have been priceless! We tried really hard to find some fun nightlife for 5 married Mormon women, but we soon found out that all people do these days is stand around drinking and swearing. No dancing, karaoke, nothing! So we hit the road and went back to our hotel to play games and talk ourselves to sleep. Even better!

The next morning we hit some of the huge Southern Plantations. We went to two different ones, and they were both so interesting and fun to see. It was quite the history lesson, too, learning about how the South was during and after slavery. We all enjoyed it a lot. Oh, and I must comment on the smell of Charleston. We just so happened to be there during the few weeks out of the year that the Magnolia Trees were in full bloom, as well as the Confederate Jasmine. The smell was so sweet and wonderful...it is hard to explain how heavenly it smelled there. OK, so back to day two. We left the second plantation and headed back downtown, this time armed with a cool and informative book we found about the historic residential areas in Charleston. So we did our own walking tour that night! First we ate dinner at Sticky Fingers, and then we walked ourselves sick that night. We even met a few of the locals as we read our little book telling us all about their houses. "Did you know that your house is buried on Pirate's treasure? And we hear there is a ghost living here - what do you think about that?" It was awesome! And the weather was so unbelievable. Just perfect.

The next day was Sunday, which meant time to go home. We had ended up with $50 left in our budget, after all our food, gas, and tours, so we all bought matching T-shirts to wear home. It was such an amazing trip, and I can hardly wait for our next Magical Mystery Tour - to be held in January 2012, planned my me. Yikes! Love you girls!!!

Spring Sports

We just finished a very fun and busy season of Spring sports for the kids. Spencer and Ella decided that they wanted to play soccer again this season, but Tyler really wanted to try football. He usually plays baseball in the Spring, but since there are only three seasons of sports per year (summer doesn't count...it's too hot) and he wanted to play four sports - we made him choose. And he chose football! Unfortunately the only league that offered tackle football in the Spring was a much bigger city league, and so the games and practices were 30 minutes away - and the opposite direction of the other kids games! So it was a very eventful and action packed Spring, to say the least!

(Ella Yelling "GO LAVA!!!!" for her team cheer.)

So first I'll start with little Ella. This season I really wanted to coach her team, since it was a group of 10 girls - all friends of Ella's. But with Bryan's busy Spring schedule - namely him being gone for 2 1/2 weeks - I knew it wasn't possible. So another dad was conned into taking charge, with me being his assistant. It was great! I loved the coaching, and those girls were just too cute. And never underestimate a team of 10 girls, either...even in a co-ed league. The didn't lose a game, and usually scored around 15 goals per game. Now Ella has always been a decent little player, but has always been content to run around in the middle of the pack smiling. Right around the middle of the road, I would say. Well, the last three games of the season, something clicked. She was amazing!! She scored 5 goals in her game yesterday! She was an animal! I can't tell you how fun it was to see her tearing it up out there. Way to go Ella!

Next up...Tyler. What a little stud. Tyler decided to go with the nickname of "Lightning" on his uniform (even though this isn't really a nickname of his at all). He wanted to go with something FAST, to strike some fear in his opponents. Well, Tyler has been playing backyard football with Spencer and Bryan for some time now, but this was his first experience with all the pads and gear. I could go on and on about his season, but I think it will suffice to say that he LOVED it!!! Absolutely loved it. His new favorite sport, new best friends, new reason for living. OK, maybe not quite that far. But he really did love it. He was really quite good for it being his first season, and he wasn't afraid out there at all. He was a fast runner, a hard hitter, and an all around great player. He was so much fun to watch!

Spencer finally got his wish and the team name that HE chose was picked for his soccer team. They were the Rattlers. Go Rattlers! Spencer played just about every position on the field, and he definitely had his strengths and weaknesses. He was much less timid and much more aggressive than in past years, and his instincts are improving. I think that he did the best as a forward, and he had some great passes and even a few shots yesterday. I was very proud of him, and of all of the kids. They worked hard and played great. And I am also very relieved that the season is OVER!!!

My Blog Book!

Well I am so excited to post that I have finally made a book out of this blog!! It has been my hope and intent from the very beginning to have this blog double as a way to keep in touch with family and friends, and also as a way for me to organize our pictures and write about the things that we're up to. I am not a scrapbooker - at all - and I hate to say that I'm not really a journaler either. But I love taking pictures of the kids and all of our adventures, and I don't want to forget any of this craziness! So I'd been researching ways to turn a blog into a family photo album/scrapbook, but I kept coming up empty handed. Until now! A friend of mine here had a Blog Book that she had made out on her coffee table, and I loved it! I immediately enlisted her help (thanks Suzie!). I wish I could say that it was a couple hour project, but it really did take quite a bit of time to format everything just right, and to choose fonts and backgrounds and layouts. But after a two week period, it was done and ordered. And here is the finished product! It is a hard cover 12X12 book, and is about 120 pages. My plan is to make one for every year (although this first one contains the last couple months of 2008 as well as all of 2009). The website I used is called Blurb.com and the software is called BookSmart. The kids all LOVE it, and it seems like there is always somebody looking at it. Just today when I took these pictures of it, Ruby spent the next 20 minutes pouring over the pages. I'm so proud of myself, too! The nagging guilt of not scrapbooking has finally been quieted! Hurray for me!!

Pinkalicious

A few weeks ago I took the girls to see the play Pinkalicious downtown. Ella has owned and loved the book for the past year or so, and we have since acquired Purplicious and Goldilicious (although neither are as good as the original). So we took a little girl's day downtown with some friends to see the play. I knew that Ella would love it, which she did, but I wasn't sure about Ruby. I was really hoping that I wouldn't be spending the entire play in the hall with her! I was so pleasantly surprised when Ruby did not move a muscle the entire show. She was completely mesmerized, and has now taken to carrying those books around everywhere. She's even added the word "pink" to her vocabulary, and she will now always choose pink ice-cream, clothes, treats, etc... when given the choice. Little girls are so much fun!!

Scouts

It has been an event filled few months in Scouts for Spencer. In February we had the Pinewood Derby, which is always the highlight of the year for Cub Scouts. We have steadily improved in our car making ability each year, and this year Bryan was determined to peak! Our car really did quite well, I have to say. We patterned this year's car after a red Mustang with white racing stripes and we named it The Red Rocket (after Bryan's beloved BMW wagon in Germany). Our past cars have been The Carlson Cruiser (we made Spencer use it for two years...lame, I know), then the Texas Turbo last year. The Rocket was definitely our fastest car, and we ended up in a tie for third place. We kept racing to break the tie, but these cars were honestly the exact same speed! So it was exciting - especially not to be eliminated in the first race like last year!

Next came the Blue and Gold Banquet in March. This year they had a Father/Son cake decorating contest. And I was determined to stay out of it!! Unfortunately, with the week of night flying that Bryan had to do, it ended up being a Mother/Son project out of necessity. At least Bryan was able to make it to the dinner! Didn't our little cake turn out cute? It was actually kind of a fun little project to work on together, and the kids and I had fun thinking of different things we could put on there to make it more "Scouty." It won one of the prizes that night, and I'm sure there were some grumbling parents because MOM helped!! Oh well! Spencer also received his Webelos patch that night, which was very exciting.

But nothing like the excitement of April's Pack Meeting, where Spencer received his Arrow of Light. For non-Scouters out there, the Arrow of Light is the highest award a Cub Scout can earn, and the only award from cubs that is worn on the Boy Scout uniform. Thankfully we've had some amazing Scout leaders here and they really should receive the credit for helping Spencer achieve this. But way to go little Spence!
