January and February are big Cub Scouting months here! In January we have the annual Pinewood Derby, and in February we have the Blue and Gold Banquet. Now, last year Tyler came home with 2nd place in the Pinewood Derby, and it was a very close race. So this year, as you can imagine, he had grand plans of coming home with the title. Well...it didn't quite work out that way! When he came in dead last in his first heat of the night, we knew we were in trouble. The look of shock, disappointment, and utter disgust on Tyler's face was priceless! He looked at Bryan like, "How could you do this to me???" I think Bryan was feeling some of those same feelings, since he just might have been planning on bringing home the title as well! Anyway, we did capture a few glorious wins as the picture shows, and Tyler was still very happy with his yellow and black "Blazing Bumblebee," modeled after his fastest Hot Wheels car. Next up in the Scouting world is the Blue and Gold Banquet. Since this dinner celebrates the birthday of Scouting, it has become tradition for the dads and sons to bring a cake commemorating the event. Since Bryan has somehow managed to be out of town or night flying for all of these events, it has become an annual mom and son tradition. Or let's face it...a MOM tradition! Since the theme this year was "Safe of the Sea," we were asked to bring a nautical themed cake. Perfect! I knew just the cake - the awesome Pirate cake I made for Tyler's birthday three years ago! I had such confidence. Unfortunately I did not plan ahead, and found myself baking the cake a mere two hours before the dinner. And with not enough time to cool, my wonderful Pirate cake fell to pieces. I mean Tyler's. There was a shocked silence in the kitchen, and I thought Tyler was going to burst into tears! After his Pinewood Derby disappointment, I couldn't let him down. But there was no salvaging the ship! Thanks to Spencer's quick thinking, and a quick Google search of "Famous Pirate Shipwrecks," we ended up with our cake titled, "The Final Resting Place of The Flying Dutchman." It was actually quite entertaining, and Tyler got a big kick out of explaining how it came to pass. He even got a 2nd place ribbon!! Whew!!
