Halloween is always such a busy time of year. We're always knee deep in the kids' Fall sports in October, which means practices on four different nights each week, and we're always just trying to make it through the first quarter of school (which is always rough!). Nevertheless, we made time for fun and the kids enjoyed it as much as always. Well, except for Spencer, who has kind of aged out of Halloween. Sad.
We carved pumpkins a few days earlier this year, which is risky in this climate (they mold in the heat and humidity), but they held out just well enough to still look good on Halloween. Not good enough for me to reach my hands inside to light a candle, but they still looked good. Bryan had warned the boys that starting this year, he would no longer be carving their pumpkins. He was tired of the cramping hands from carving 4 pumpkins into the elaborate designs the kids ask for, so he told them they were on their own. They did a great job, actually! We did get a good laugh out them, though, as they complained about their aching hands! Tyler did an NFL pumpkin; Spencer did a Nike swoosh with "#Swag" carved below it; Bryan made a soccer ball pumpkin for Ella; and Bryan made a kitty on top of a pumpkin for Ruby. All very cute!
We went to our yearly Trunk or Treat at church, where the kids had a great time with their friends, and I somehow neglected to take even a single picture. Thankfully we had Halloween a few nights later, and I forced the kids (Tyler) to wait until I could get pictures taken of all of them together before they could head out with their friends. The costumes this year consisted of:
Ruby: A bride. She was told by a darling little boy, "Ruby, you look beautiful!"
Ella: A nerd. A darling, cute little nerd.
Tyler: He was the usual football player for Trunk or Treat, but then changed to a Zombie Soldier for Halloween.
Spencer: A skater. Or in other words, he dressed as he does every morning for Seminary and carried a skateboard.
Tyler tore off with friends as soon as pictures were taken, and Bryan took the girls and met up with two of their friends to go Trick or Treating. They made quite a haul, but always like to come home a little early to help pass out candy. Tyler was a different story altogether. He came home with TEN pounds of candy! Yes, he weighed it. Poor Spencer, as a high schooler, was really too old to go Trick or Treating. He didn't think so, but I made the command decision. He was pretty depressed about it, and I wonder if I should have just let him go. Too late now! He had zero interest in coming outside with me to pass out candy, so he just sat inside and did his homework. :(
After the sore disappointment from last year, when I made the terrible mistake of making Mummy Pizzas instead of Mummy Meatloaf for dinner, we went back to the meatloaf, threw in some ghost potatoes, and we finished up and ate the first of our Gourmet Caramel Apples. Oh my, they were so good! We decided to up the ante this year, and use homemade caramel to dip the apples into. I can never go back! They were the best ever. We topped them with different types of chocolate and candy or cookies, and we enjoyed them immensely. It was a great Halloween!
